An HSH partnership to celebrate

Home Suite Hope sends a huge shout-out to Cakes2Connect.

Throughout 2024, Cakes2Connect volunteers often showed up at our office door to deliver a birthday cake for one of our single parents.

Cakes2Connect is an Oakville-based nonprofit venture that provides homemade birthday cakes to women who deserve to be celebrated on their special day!

Beyond the birthdays, HSH’s partnership with the new organization is one to celebrate.

According to its website, Lori Harris was inspired to form Cakes2Connect based on the delivery of a surprise birthday cake she received from caring Aunts (Evelyn Harris and Laura Bond) when she was just eight years old. The memory of that surprise stayed in her memory and later served as the inspiration that led to the founding of the Oakville-based charitable organization.

Volunteers bake cakes in their home with their own ingredients and then deliver them to senior women who are on their own in the community or single mothers facing challenges as they work to improve their lives.

It’s a treat and recognition that neither group may otherwise receive on their special day.

“A number of older women live alone and don’t have family or friends close by. In addition, there are younger single mothers facing very challenging situations for different reasons. Our goal is to brighten these women’s birthdays and create special moments by showing that we care through our donated cakes. With these cakes, our recipients know that one of our Volunteers took the time to bake and decorate just for them,” states Cakes2Connect’s website.

The organization is run by compassionate women who are enthusiastic and positive volunteers.

“Through this gesture, we hope to make a difference as the memory of this simple kindness lingers in the heart of each recipient,” continues the website.

Volunteers bake and ice a small birthday cake. They can choose the design, but the group also offers suggestions. Bakers cover the cost of their ingredients and then deliver it to a pre-arranged address in Oakville and Burlington. The baker does not visit with nor share the cake with the recipient. Volunteers can bake as many or as few cakes as they like.

A clean kitchen, good hygiene practices, a valid  driver’s license and car insurance are required. Volunteers are protected from liability through The Ontario Donation of Food Act, 1994.

This is one of the many individuals, groups and corporates that get involved with HSH.

Whether it’s through volunteering, donations – in-kind or monetary – or sponsorships or grants, HSH welcomes everyone who helps us as we support single parents move their lives from poverty to stability.
